DJ Spooky

Paul. D MillerDJ Spooky

1. Is this your first time visiting China? What makes you come and play in China?

This is my first time dj'ing in mainland China, but I've worked with Chinese artists like Min Xiao Fen and Jing Zhou! Jing Zhou narrates my new album. It's about economics.

2. You've collaborated with music elite like Ryuichi Sakamoto, Thurston Moore, Mathew Shipp etc., what kind of people can inspire you and make you want to work with them?

I'm really interested in getting out of normal American hip hop. I'm listening to stuff like Mulatu Astatke from Ethiopia, Jin (chinese hip hop!), Martin Atkin's "Made in China" dub soundsystem, Dj Wordy from Beijing etc I'm inspired by people who break the rules and don't accept normal styles. The world has so much music, why bother with normal stuff?

3. The title track of your recent release The Secret Song featured Chinese novelist, economist Jing Zhou. How did you come up with the idea to mix a story in Mandarin with Adam Smith’s concept?

America has been going through a massive financial crisis, but China has recovered and is moving into a stronger situation. I'm intrigued by the global dynamics of economics, and how it influences everything from culture, art, literature and science to the basic way people define life. Anyway I wanted to make an album that was a mirror of this kind of "entropy" in economics, and that's why having the album title song in Mandarin was PERFECT!

4. You said The Secret Song is centered on the collision between economics and globalization in sound, how did you put together all the materials you need for this album? What kind of reception do you expect from the audience?

The main thing about America is that it thinks its the center of the world. That is changing, but people all over the planet love American culture. There's a kind of paradox going on. After the last 8 years of Bush, I wanted to do an album that would be a kind of 'reset' for the way the rest of the world looks at America through the prism of Dj culture. It's a big task, but hey... someone's gotta do it!

5. Would you like to make people dance or make them think while you are DJing?

Yes! I've written books with MIT Press, which is part of one of America's top techonology universities, with people like Pierre Boulez, Moby, Chuck D, Brian Eno, and others. It's called "Sound Unbound" - but the basic idea is that "thinking" is a kind of dance. I don't see why people always want to separate music from art and other forms of creativity. So yes! Dancing is incredibly creative, and so music should inspire new ways of thinking about the world.

6. What kind of show can we expect from you at Zoo Festival(17th of October in Beijing) ?

It's going to be a wild, fun party! With lots of cool video projection I've done for the new album. Just think of it as downtown NY meets downtown Beijing!
